The Gran Viaje

Arequipa

Peru

Arequipa was the next stop on our route towards the coast. Although we spent a couple days there last year, we opted to return because it's a comfortable place to stay. We camped in the truck on the lawn next to the Hotel Mercedes (S/22 per person / night) for 3 nights and met two more couples on overland trips – both from Germany unsurprisingly.

Our sole mission in Arequipa was eating good food. The highlight was a dinner at ChiCha, one of Peruvian superstar chef Gaston Acurio's many restaurants. The Peruvian branch specializes in traditional dishes with a modern twist and the food was very good. Their version of my favorite Peruvian dish, Rocoto Relleno, was the best thing we had.
