Caral

The Caral-Supe ruins are described as the oldest known urban center in the Americas, and were discovered in 1948, but only recently have been getting more international attention. The ruins of the stone pyramids had been mostly covered up by sand over the centuries, and at one time been mistaken for hills, and now are being slowly uncovered and repaired. Some of the pyramids are pretty well recovered, and some still look like mounds with a few blocks poking out. It covers a huge area and wikipedia says there more than 3,000 residents. In the future, once the work is done, I imagine it will be a really impressive site. When we showed up we couldn't find any place to stay as the area as there is so little tourism development, but finally we met awesome Scott and his brother Bruce, who are building a backpacker hostel now called Caraltambo. They let us camp for free and showed us all their grand ideas for the hostel. They even shared their Pisco and Crush soda (pronounced "Crooosh") with us under a sky full of stars.

Caral is the oldest city in Latin America, and it is about 4500-5000 years old.

It is a series of step pyramids built around a central temple.

Three of the pyramids.

The friendly owners of the place we camped kept bunnies and this is one of the babies. Super soft!

Cuteness.

Jordan just reached the center of the meditation labyrinth at the place we stayed.
