Llanganuco

Peru

Llanganuco was our favorite stop in the Cordillera Blanca. We camped at Llanganuco Lodge in such an incredible situation that we would just sit there feeling amazed at where we were. In front of us was the beautiful valley of Yungay, full of small farms. Behind us was Cerro Huandoy to the left and Cerro Huascarin to the right. Huascarin is the tallest mountain in Peru, and Huandoy is in the top 10. In between us and these two mountains was two thousands-of-year-old ruins on the shores of a chalky-blue lake. On night, in the middle of the night, I woke up having to pee. Normally it sucks to have to climb out of the truck in the middle of the night. This time I got out and was surrounded by a sky full of stars and two snowy mountains glowing in the moonlight.

On our second day there some of the hotel's guests joined us for a hike into the Llanganuco National Park, where we saw the beautiful lake and the river coming down from it, and all the amazing scenery surrounding them. A beautiful day.

Unluckily for us the lodge didn't have extra food for us because we hadn't made a reservation and they were way up at the top of the mountain, and we had basically only a hunk of spinach, mangoes, and some lentils for our two days there. Luckily the manager shared some of his oatmeal and the amazing chef Percy gave us the lomo saltado that he had left after he served his patrons, or we wouldn't of even lasted those two wonderful days there.

The beautiful view from the front of the Lodge we stayed at into the Yungay valley.

The small lake next to the ruins behind the lodge.

Behind the lodge are these thousands-of-years-old ruins. They have not been fully studied and are not much visited so there is not much info on them.

This is Huandoy, one of the tallest mountains in Peru, and right next to our camping spot.

And this is the famous Huascarin, the tallest mountain in Peru.

We walked the locals way from where we stayed to Llanganuco Park.
